Eastern Christian Studies
The Faculty of Eastern Christian Studies is subdivided into three sections: theological-patristic, liturgical, and historical.
After completing the Bachelor’s Degree in Theology (first cycle), students are admitted to the Licentiate (S.E.O.L.). Those who hold a Bachelor’s Degree in History may enroll in the Licentiate in the history section.
After completing the Licentiate (second cycle), students can enroll in the Doctoral program (S.E.O.D.).
Those interested in deepening a specific area or in having a general knowledge of the Christian East can enroll in the program of the Diploma in Eastern Christian Studies.
The Pontifical Oriental Institute, following the Holy See’s adherence to the Bologna Process, has adopted the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS), as requested by the Dicastery for Culture and Education.
Based on this system, over the course of the Licentiate the student must take and pass exams in accordance with the following breakdown:
- eight courses common to all sections (for a total of 24 ECTS);
- six principal courses from one’s own section (for a total of 18 ECTS);
- six auxiliary courses among all sections (for a total of 18 ECTS);
- two seminars (for a total of 10 ECTS);
- two annual language courses (for a total of 20 ECTS).
The student must also:
- participate in academic events offered by the Institute, including symposia, conferences, etc., accruing a total of 6 ECTS.
