Biography

Rafał Zarzeczny, SJ, was born in Poland in 1969. He joined the novitiate of the Society of Jesus in Gdynia in 1989. After the philosophical and philological studies in Cracow, he was sent to Rome for two years of regency in the Vatican Radio. He received his theological education at the Pontifical Faculty of Theology Bobolanum in Warsaw, where he was ordained a priest in 2001. Gradually, he studied Oriental languages (Syriac, Coptic and Ethiopic) and history of Early Church at the University of Warsaw and the University of Stefan Cardinal Wyszyński in Warsaw, then Oriental hagiography at the Société des Bollandistes in Brussels.

 

He completed his PhD in Theology and Patristics at the University of Silesia in Katowice in 2006. After a post-doctorate year at Augustinianum and PIO in Rome, and his tertianship in Dublin, he returned into Poland for teaching Patristics at Bobolanum. Since 2010 he is a Professor of Patristics and Ethiopian Studies in the Faculty of Eastern Ecclesiastical Sciences at the Pontifical Oriental Institute in Rome, travelling also annually to the Horn of Africa for the scientific researches on Ethiopic manuscripts, literature and archaeology.
