The course aims to illustrate the more significant moments of the Church of Jerusalem in the first millennium. 

  • Transformation of Jerusalem into a holy site during the reign of Constantine. 
  • From Constantine to the creation of a patriarchal see in Chalcedon. 
  • From Chalcedon to the Arab conquest. 
  • From the Arab conquest to the era of the crusades. 
  • The Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem.
  • Personages, theologians, and noted authors of the Church of Jerusalem.
  • Palestinian monasticism.
  • The Jerusalem liturgy.
  • Relations among the patriarchs, imperial politics, and the Muslim califs.
  • Jerusalem, heart of the Melchite Church under Muslim rule.

Objective

To make known the history of the Mother of all the Churches of the first millennium.
